Today Mississippi HB 314 which clarifies the limits of municipalities and counties to restrict the carrying of firearms and provides a legal remedy for citizens who are adversely impacted by local gun control ordinances becomes law. It has been a long hard battle for Mississippi gun owners who want to hold local law makers accountable for their gun control ordinances.
When Rep. Andy Gipson first proposed this legislation we saw powerful associations of local elected officials aggressively lobbying against the bill, claiming it strips them of powers they don’t legally have. But, the citizens of Mississippi overcame their opposition and pushed this bill through the House, Senate and ultimately to the desk of Governor Bryant.
Now its up to us, the citizens, to use the tools provided by the legislature to force the local politicians to comply with state law. Mississippi Carry, Inc. a grass roots organization representing gun owners throughout the state has taken up this fight on behalf of citizens.
“Mississippi Carry will present a total of twenty-seven (27) complaints to the Mississippi Attorney General’s office concerning county and municipal signs and ordinances which violate Mississippi’s preemption statutes.” said Reed Martz, attorney for Mississippi Carry, Inc “we expect the counties and cities to immediately take steps to amend, remove, or rescind the offending signs and ordinances upon notice of their illegality.”
Mike Stuart, Director of Mississippi Carry said, “We expect to start seeing responses before August 1st and most likely many on the list will make changes as soon as they know they are in violation.”
Any citizen may file a complaint with Attorney General Jim Hood if they have been adversely affected by an illegal gun ban. Firearm’s expert Rick Ward outlined the steps a citizen should use to gather the necessary information and report a violation to the A.G. in a previous article on Mississippi Gun News, Citizens to Investigate Their Own Law Complaints.
It’s time for gun owners to stand up and put a stop to these illegal ordinances.
